It's the End of the Year, As We Know It...

New Year’s Eve/Day are always particular points for me. I hate to use the word bittersweet so maybe nostalgic or hopeful. It’s a time to reflect on the previous year’s happenings and anticipate the coming year’s.

Here are some highlights from 2012.

1. Chicago: Matt and I’s June trip to the Windy City and seeing Wrigley, the museums and the Lincoln Zoo, Willis Tower, and the culinary fun of pizza, hot dogs, and Greek food.

2. Monterey: Matt and I traveled to California to sightsee and be with some family. Kevin and Jason and Sara were amazing hosts and it was too short of a trip. We celebrated our birthdays too.

3. Bought my condo: After picking out colors, countertops, and floors, was finally able to close and move in in May.

4. Sold my condo: After loving the spacious ceilings, the walk-in closets, the multiple bathrooms, the attached garage, and the feel of new, I sold the condo in November. It was on the market for 30 days.

5. Moved to Dickinson/Moved in with Matt: We finally decided it was time. We picked out a lovely storage unit to handle our overflow and moved our belongings and our cats together. This has been a big adjustment, sometimes hard because of the house and space and the fact that we’ve both been on our own for 10 years, however, the fact that we see each other on a daily basis, we get to argue about what to put on the walls, I wake up to him (and his bed hog ways) and get to fall asleep (defending by ¼ of the bed) each night makes the past year of driving back and forth seem so worth it.

6. Changed Jobs: I put my notice in at KK and took a job at Job Service. What a change!! Private to Government sector. Industry change which meant completely different work styles, co-worker styles, and job deliverables. I went from a job where one of my co-workers had a collection of Mr. Potato heads to a position where we talk about social services projects and veteran’s preferences. I admit, I miss the creative sessions and seeing what came out but I like what I do and the diversity of what happens every day and I have a great group of co-workers.

7. Matt’s work growth: The airport has continued to grow and Matt’s days have become stressful. However I’m proud of what he’s accomplished during his time there, and I’m not the only one who noticed, I was so proud to see Matt accept his award for Airport of the Year. I remember when we started dating, when he took me on a tour of the unfinished terminal, he told me that he was going to make Airport of the Year, without a doubt in his voice.

And the big news:

8. Matt and I became engaged. These past seven items have all changed my year but I know this event will change my life. We’ve been making lists and planning the wedding and planning our life. There are days where reality settles in and I realize we are talking about forever and there are days that the wedding feels 900 light years away. All I know is that from here, we are exactly 250 days from the big day and I can’t wait to marry him. We have a hall and bridesmaids and colors and all that stuff, but most importantly, we have the support of our family, both of our families, to be exact. And this support makes me feel pretty awesome and has added another layer of fun to the planning process.

All in all, 2012 has been pretty amazing for Matt and I, I’m excited for what 2013 brings but if it had a movie trailer, I know there would be a wedding and some parties hopefully some traveling and a lot of family.

Best meals of the year: Ironically when I think back to the meals that stood out, it wasn’t so much what was served but the context that we had them. They include our surf and turf for Valentine’s Day, our Chicago dogs, our Greek town meal, our dinner at the Chop House, fondueing on Christmas Day, making ribs at the farm, homemade pizzas at the Remynse’s, and our camping cook-offs. Yes, I love food, but I love the experience that food provides including the conversation and the camaraderie.

Final and Final Final Christmas

The last two Christmas’s were lowkey, just like the first. We spent Christmas Day at the Farm with my parents and sister and her boyfriend Robert. We woke up; Matt went out and helped my dad with chores, again. He could have been employee of the month with the help he put in. We then had Christmas bread from Grandmas Elaine and opened presents. Matt and I had gotten our present from Mom and Dad earlier so I wasn’t expecting anything but Mom wasn’t having that she still had presents for me under the tree and much to Matt’s dismay she also got me non-electrical string lights for the camper! Can it be camping season yet?

It was a blast to watch the family open presents including Alaina open up the snake skin purse that I got her, Dad open the windsock I got him and the “files” that Matt got him and Mom open up her sparkle tank and her compost bucket. And as much as I like the present opening, the next part is my favorite, the fondueing. I look forward to it every year. We started this tradition 4 or 5 Christmas’s ago and it’s continued to grow. This year’s creations included homemade corn dogs, tator tots, and premade onion rings. Not only does the food taste good but it’s so slow paced and I love how my father gets into it.

The biggest difference of this year compared to the past was the addition of the boys. Dad finally had an even playing field with Robert and it was nice to see how everyone got along and interacted and visited. We covered a wide range of discussion points from drink prices in the 80’s to cars and on and on. I do have to admit online, and have admitted vocally, that Robert has been a nice addition to the group and has been great to/with/for Alaina. I did have to laugh when he couldn’t believe that she wore his good coat out to bareback on her horses…welcome to the club. It was such a wonderful day, wish it could have been longer and wish we didn’t have to get back to Dickinson and wish the snow wouldn’t have blown over the road a bit.

On the drive home, I did reflect on the entire Christmas weekend and all the people, in all the houses, and all the food and it actually brought tears to my eyes. There have been some lows in my life but when I look at where I am at and all these people that are there to share my life and theirs with me, I can’t believe the high I’m on.
Matt and I ended the night at our house. We opened our presents and he finally got the goose blind that I’d been making him wait to get. I had him fooled, he DID not think he was getting that. I’d been keeping that one pretty close to my chest. Was glad to see the surprise and the smile. He surprised me too, I got a milk frother to make lattes and for the second year in a row, Mom copy-catted him and they both got me a pastry cloth. He did one up her and I got a French rolling pin, I’m excited to see how to use it, especially on reading the advantages to it versus the standard pins. So I drank my frothed coffee while we set up his blinds with the cats played inside it. We watched the Hunger Games and went to bed. You may have even heard my sigh of relief when I hit the sheets.

Best meal: Fondueing always wins. I think my favorite combination is still the hot dog wrapped in bread dough and dipped into the cheese!

“That was pretty good; especially considering it was a corn dog.” – Dad after putting chocolate on what he thought was a piece of plain fried dough.

2 and 3:5

After Christmas with the Remynse’s, we had Christmas with the Moser’s and Dagman’s. These are the extended family Christmas’s on my side. We started off at Wade and Lynn’s house and had apps and snacks and some catching up. Lynn had some amazing shrimp cocktail and Holly had some great spun butter that I can’t wait to get the recipe for. You could tell it was the off year as a few faces were missing but they were thought of and a few stories may have even been told in their absence!

The next day, after a relaxing morning with Mom and Matt shooting a few pheasants (almost limited out!) We headed off to Grace and Rick’s for the Dagman Christmas. It was a full house, with all uncles and aunts present and only 2 cousin families missing, but it was a FULL house! And as each family grows or we become families, it becomes more full! This wasn’t Matt’s first Dagman holiday, so he didn’t have culture shock of all the people, or the organized chaos, or the temperature, or the food, or the aunts, or the wine! It so fun to see him accepted by my vocal aunts. They will tease him and flirt all in the same breath. The best part was watching the Peters family open presents. Between Kemma and Carsteyn so excited about presents and Aunt Descie getting the pic of her when she was little and Am appreciating my simple postcard, it really drove home what Christmas is all about.

Best meal: Both were good meals but Mom’s stuffing and the turkey is what made Grace’s meal take the cake!

We started our Christmas season off in an amazing way with Randy and Michele. They came up on Friday night with a fully loaded pickup! We opened presents that night after having a great meal that Matt prepared of walleye, caught by Randy and Michele. Wow did we get spoiled! I don’t know what was my favorite, Matt’s tool box, my sewing machine, our Keurig, or my fancy flamingo lights, I’m not sure. It was all pretty wonderful. I need to grab my sewing stuff out of storage and I’m going to be good to go.

The next day, the boys went out hunting and us girls went and did some shopping after breakfast. They did more walking than shooting but that’s the risk you run this late in the season, all the birds are a little too skitterish. Michele and I had much better luck on our hunt! We finished the night right with a spread of food while we prepped for pizza and dessert. Randy’s pizza was amazing, he should give lessons!! He did his traditional style but then he took out the deep dish pan that we got him for Christmas. I stuffed myself way past uncomfortable! AND then to top it off, Michele played a bit with her Christmas presents and made crème brulee. Even writing this in retrospect, I’m getting hungry at the memory. She was worried that it wouldn’t taste very good but I could have had a gallon of what she made.

After sitting down, completely stuffed past the point of uncomfortable, I realized how lucky I am. Not only did I find this amazing man that I plan to marry but he came with an amazing family that makes me laugh and seems to like me! I couldn't have planned a better way to start the holiday season.

Best meal: yes, the fish was pretty good, but when you take that amazing, awe-inspiring pizza and combine it with Michele’s sinful crème brulee, it’s no longer a competition between the meals.

“mmmmmmm, don't let them take the leftovers” – ALM to MJR after the first bite of the beautiful pizza

Christmas is in the air!

So…Christmas got into full swing with the Christmas tree shopping. I will remind everyone that Matt and I are old. Not old like dirt, but in terms of couples, we are old. We have each been on our own for 10 years before taking the plunge and moving in. And being on our own, we have our own ways of thinking, ways of cleaning, ways of cooking, and ways of celebrating holidays. For instance we’ve stuck a compromise; we will put up my artificial tree every other year and get a real tree in the off years. So because Matt always wins, we started with a real tree. We headed up to the mall and we learned a valuable lesson, we don’t wait until the 12th of December as the yard appeared pretty picked over. We had two tree options that we narrowed the lot down to. We did have one come home with us!
The cats didn’t know what to think about it. We have had all of them under it at different times, Lola has even been seen curled up between the tree and the baseboard snoozing. I was very impressed that there wasn’t a huge issue with them and the tree. We did get Matt’s tree skirt under the tree and he put his angel on top. We’ll either need to drop his and mine, or go and get our own skirt and topper, so it’s ours versus his and mine.

We also got quite a bit of Christmas shopping done on a trip to Bismarck. We did most of it online for the ease and sale but finished up locally, at the mall, with the crowds. Ugh. That place will sure take the Christmas spirit out of you. One of the highlights of the trip was spending some time with Tiffany. She made a trip back to spend some time with her family and I got her for a morning! We caught up, heard about the travel adventures and talked wedding flowers and what we wanted for awhile. Wedding list update of what we have: bridesmaids, bridesmaid dresses, wedding dress, venues, DJ, decorator, colors, card box, 1 host couple, 2 personnel attendants, 3 program attendants, officiate, hairdresser, and reception hall. There are other things in the plans but nothing fully confirmed. Tiff says she has enough to go off of for the flowers and I’m excited to see what she comes up with.

Best meal: Brazilian grill, we went with Greg and Stacy for a great night out. That place has such great food. The shortribs, the sirloin, the top steak, the pineapple, the buns, the parmesan pork…and it’s all on a stick!!! Mmmmmm

It's Beginning to Look A Lot Like Christmas!

It’s official, winter is here. Snow has come down and had to be shoveled. Everything is white. If you’ve read the blog before, you know how I have felt about snow. And to be honest I thought I’d have minimal dealings with snow this year since the condo had a maintenance team on hand. Well, I’m back in Dickinson and I have the cutest maintenance team ever, it’s a one-man operation and he did a great job after the weekend.

It’s officially 15 days from Christmas and things have been a bit crazy. We haven’t bought the tree but we did write our lists, have been buying presents, and I’ve been doing some light baking. Christmas to me has always been about lists: who I’m getting gifts for and what they are getting, what I’d like, groceries, what I’m bringing to all the Christmases, and on and on. Last year I felt so robbed of Christmas but this year it’s actually feeling a bit more seasonal. I don’t know if it’s because of Matt and that we are together or what, it just feels like that time of year.

We also took in a holiday charity event this year. Because of a good friend, we got tickets to do to DSU’s Yuletime, which raises money for scholarships. It’s a more formal event, which always makes me nervous. Matt wore his black suit and got to bust out his gray peacoat, he looked so good. It wasn’t until I got home that I realized we only had the even picture taken, here’s hoping that turns out. The way the event works is you start off all together with a silent auction. Winners are announced and then people all go off to separate host homes in the community where you eat supper. After supper, the bus comes back to get you and you go back for the live auction and the dance. We got to partake in some red chili cupcakes, which had amazing frosting because of a couple that shared with us. I also thought Matt was going to strangle me when I bid on a Yankee baseball package. I figured if we could get the cubs/yanks tickets in New York, that would be two birds with one stone! We didn’t get it, and that’s okay. Made Matt’s heart rate raise a little. We did have a really good time and couldn’t believe the clock when we got home, 1:30! Don’t ask what we accomplished the day after tho! So much for being able to handle the party crowd!

TonyDanza has been making me laugh, he’s still trying to sneak under the bed on a daily basis. I think we are his buzz kill. I watched Matt crawl on the floor parallel to him and the bed so he couldn’t dive under. He had such a sad face of disappointment, almost want to let him scoot under just so he doesn’t look so disheartened!

Best meal: Yuletime meal of steak and buttered chicken, dirty rice, pitas, peas and asparagus. We went to Joe and Carlene’s house and they were amazing hosts completing the meal with Rum drinks and chocolate martinis.

Sorting Out, Sleeping In

We had a big weekend. It may not be to everyone else, but to Matt and I, it was a world of difference!

We unpacked, sorted, organized, shifted, and settled. We don’t have 9 million boxes in the living room, I think we are down to 3 boxes…and one is very scary and Matt’s using it as a foot stool, so I hate to take that away from him. We also put up some shelving, to help organize a bit. I unpacked my china cabinet. Matt made jerky. I seasoned pretzels. We slept in. We made breakfast, read the paper, made keurig’s. We made a trip to the camper and to the second hand store. It felt good to see things settle at bit.

We also had Brendan stay with us while he was in Dickinson for Guard Training. We took him down to “Ladies Night Out” in Downtown Dickinson. When I was at the college, I started the event from a blog idea that I found. It was a great event and one that I really took pride in while I was in that position. They are in their 4th year and have had quite a few shoppers each year, really bringing life back to the downtown area. We had supper at Bogey’s and then headed over to the Brickhouse for martini’s. I think the boys had a bit too much fun as Matt enjoys playing bartender when we got back home. I headed off to bed and those two stayed up to talk about boy things (guns, guns, and animals). I think 6am came a bit early for our house but at least everyone was moving and in good spirits, for the most part.

We did end the weekend with baths for all the cats. They all looked so sad and felt so sorry for themselves that they didn’t hiss or fight. They are getting better with each other. At different times they’ll try to play with each other, especially the girls, but it’s like they don’t know how to play or they are afraid that it’s not play and just delayed hissing. TonyDanza is still trying to hide under the bed, he’s getting pretty sneaky and Matt has to be on the top of his game, otherwise he’ll get under. I do laugh at his attempts each night. Sometimes he’s pretty relentless.

Big event of the week was that the condo sold on Nov 30. It’ll be great to save money now for the wedding and our future but I’ll miss that place.

Best Meal of the week: Ribeyes with cooked carrots and rice.

Moving...

Okay…

Things have been a little crazy lately. Okay, things have been a lot of crazy lately. I’m just getting through my first full month at Job Service. Matt’s been very busy at the airport with airline issues but also with legislative projects. I know these projects can be stressful for him, but I haven’t doubted his competence and the job that he is asked to do and when you look as good as him in a suit, it’s just icing on the cake.

The big news is the condo. Last Friday, I spent my last night there, mattress on the floor and all. I moved in mid-March and was out the end of November. It was a beautiful condo and now I have to live with a boy. It wasn’t like other places that I lived in, it was brand new. I watched it go up, I picked out the cabinets, the floor, the paint, the counters, and the tile. I waited for it and it was so light and airy. It seemed like I worked so hard to get in there. In fact, I waited to move in longer than I lived there. Don’t get me wrong, I wouldn’t not want to have moved to live in Dickinson with Matt, there was just something great about that condo for me. I did say my final good-byes, walked around the emptiness, and appreciated the place. I officially close on Friday. It was on the market for exactly 30 days.

The fun part of the “moving” weekend was Thanksgiving. We were in Lansford with Randy and Michele. Matt went out hunting in the morning and Michele, with my sad help, got the meal prepared. I loved the smoked turkey. I hadn’t had that but the more things that are made for me smoked, the more I like them! It was great to sit with the family, talk, and Michele shared some family pics with me. It was great to see their wedding pic and their family pics with younger versions of Matt and Eric. The only sucky part of the day was when I had to leave to drive all the way back to Dickinson to work. I didn’t want to leave. The roads and wind could have been better, but they’ve been worse too. Matt did get his deer before noon, did it in one shot too. He is willing to give Kevin hunting lessons as he appears to let lead fly a bit more freely.

Black Friday did not really involve any shopping for me, I did do some online browsing and I did pick up a camera, we’ll see what we think but I need to get to taking more pics again! My camera enjoyed Cabo a little too much and hasn’t been the same since! I did work in the morning and took the truck back to Bismarck in the afternoon. I did a little running around but I am so not used to driving that big honky vehicle around town and parking wasn’t fun at all! I tried to take some things into Plato’s closet but ended up getting irritated and now I’m boycotting them for 6 months (At least!). Because of my frustration with them, I accidentally donated a pumpkin pie, my mother’s scentsy, and a pound and a half of jerky to Goodwill, which was where I took the clothes that Plato’s closet told me was outdated. I was super irritated to lose my Pampered Chef Deep Dish, which had a lid!! It’s not that I used it a ton but I loved it because of the lid! I sure felt dumb because of that mistake.

In terms of being thankful, it was a weekend to be thankful for family. My mother was amazing and came on Friday night and we moved a bunch of the boxes down to the garage. Matt’s parents brought him back down from Lansford and then helped load things up and then unload it in Dickinson. And my parents helped load and then provided two amazing dinners. It feels very final to have everything (except what’s in storage) in Dickinson. Matt did tell my father that I’m worth it, kinda. The house is a mess, there’s boxes everywhere, the cats think it’s a giant maze, and it looks like a hurricane warzone. It’s a slow process to get things to “fit” just right and combine. Some days have been easier than others. Nike isn’t dealing with it the best but considering this is the first big change in her life, I’ll let her have a buy. I even felt bad for her this past week and let her sleep with Matt and I. TonyDanza and Lola are doing pretty well. TD’s happy that he got his chair back and Lola likes all the boxes and new places to crawl on but she’s pretty resilient and curious. What’s funny is the thing that brings me the best sense of calm in moving is the freezer. Michele defrosted the freezer, I was able to put in my dividers and then organize the beef and deer. I know that that will change as I get other things worked out, but it is a weird sense of accomplishment.

This weekend we put over 400 miles on my car and 500 on his pickup.

Best Meal: Thanksgiving dinner beats the Brickhouse! There’s something very comforting about that traditional meal.

“That cheese burger was good but it wasn’t Moser beef.” –Randy after leaving Kroll’s.

Fall Back. Winter Ahead.

Another quiet week in Dickinson, it would have been near about perfect if Brutus wouldn’t have showed up. It appears that they are naming more than tropical storms and hurricanes, they are now naming our winter storms too. Brutus was supposed to drop 5-10 inches on our door stop and maybe if the rain would have turned into snow we might have. Instead we have just an inch of snow over a thick layer of ice.

We got stuff done around the house, including some baking. I made homemade French bread, which almost turned out on Friday and then on Sunday I made peach muffins and banana bread. The banana bread turned out the best. Matt was no slouch either, he made jerky, which we made into a meal on Saturday night. The stuff is so addictive.

The big news of the week is that the condo is sold. It’s extremely bittersweet. Yes, it’s great that it sold, as we’ll start saving for the wedding and it cuts a cost but it was such a beautiful condo and I loved it. And I had picked everything out and I had my own bathroom and I had 2 walk-in closets. We have til Nov 30 to get out, so it’s a quick turnaround.

The other big deal is that Lola and Nike played for a good 5 minutes. Nike ran up to Lola and didn’t hiss and it seemed that neither of them knew what to do. It didn’t last long but at least it was a brief cease-fire. We haven’t seen any play since then, but at least we know it’s possible.

Best meal: gyros

P.s. Matt's dear uncle Kevin would have made the blog, but I'm mad at him for coming 2 weeks too early. We didn't get to Lansford for opening deer to see his face or listen to his new line of bull.

Reinventing the weekend.

First Tuesday in November marks election day on the calendar. It’s a bit interesting in the house that I live in. My mother is a vocal Republican (Mom, when you read this, don’t gasp, it’s okay), and Matthew is a bit more Democratic than I’d like some days. I feel like I walk this interesting party line sometimes. Working for the agency did leave an interesting taste in my mouth regarding politics though. Needless to say, I voted but as I get older, voting gets harder.

This past weekend we went to Aubrey and Jerry’s wedding. She looked beautiful and I know the weddings been a long time coming so it was great to see her happy and she looked beautiful. Mel came up to celebrate the wedding. She has a little trouble getting to Dickinson so we were robbed of her time so I’m hoping for a good old fashioned wine session at another time.

Only thing I'd really like to see is my nasal drip and sinus infection disappear, I'm still stuffy and yucky. And officially tired of it!

I’m the most excited to announce that for the first time in a year and a half, Matt and I had a travel free together weekend. Usually we never get both of those things, meaning, we either have to travel or we didn’t get to see each other. But this weekend, we slept in, we didn’t drive 200 miles, and we had a lazy Sunday. It was so nice.

Matt did do some traveling the beginning part of the week, I was glad he got to use his time doing something he wanted. He went home to Lansford and spent some time with his parents and did a bit of goose hunting. Even bagged himself a bird.

Here’s an updated item to the wedding checklist:
-Wedding cake topper (and this time around the groom has a head)

Most Unique Meal: Barbecued Goose….main ingredient (aside from the goose): apple juice

“If you don’t like it we can go buy a pizza.” – MJR regarding the “cooked goose”

After the election results were reported:
"I'm depressed...this isn't good. I won't yell at (Matt)..I only wish him good because his life is yours now...you're his redeeming quality. Tell him to thank you." - Sara, card caring Republican. I love her!

What a Wonderful thing a Family is.

Sometimes life is pretty good. Sure, the cats may be hating each other, a little less each day, but my life feels pretty great.  It was another learning week at work. It was my second full week at Job Service. My official title is Customer Service Consultant but the boil down is that I work with employers to provide business services and because it’s a small office, I also help job seekers find job opportunities and work with their resume and anything job related. I know that this learning stage is a necessary part of starting a job, I’m excited for when I’m a bit more confident about things going on at the office.

Matt and I have been slowly unpacking...It’s still a matter or sorting things through. It is nice to see some of my clothes that I haven’t seen for a year or so…and I’ve also opened the giant picture box and I’m excited to dig in and start putting those things up too.

I did have a little issue this week, that Matthew thought was so funny. TonyDanza likes bread, or at least he thinks he likes bread. He usually remembers he doesn’t like bread once he rips into the bag and drags it all over the floor. So in an attempt to stop this expensive little habit, I had been storing the bread in the fridge. Matt disagreed with this so I’ve been putting it in the microwave, which had been working until I had to defrost the sirloins we were having for supper.  So in an attempt to save the 4 hamburger buns and the entire loaf of bread, I put them in the oven. This was a great plan until I came home and Matt and I decided to bake pasta. In the oven. Which Matt turned on. And I remembered about 10 minutes after he turned it on. Needless to say I ruined that loaf and pulled the melting package and loaf out of the oven while Matt watched laughing.

The highlight of my week was Saturday. My Aunt Descie and Uncle Randy threw Matt and I an engagement party/Welcome to the Family party. It was amazing to be surrounded by family and fun. We took pics, were toasted, and ate an amazing meal! I don’t know what I liked more, the brisket, the pork, or the turkey…mmmm, I don’t think I have to even tell you what the best meal was. I’ll be enjoying those left overs for a couple days. Matt did a little name training. How to say and spell Remynse and we all did a little wine drinking. I did have to laugh at Aunt Janie’s gift of Matt’s favorite gin, which they enjoyed together when we went to Fargo this past summer.

The other awesome part of the night was that Kemma and Carsteyn thought that our engagement party was our wedding. We had to explain to them that we aren't getting married right now but have to wait until Kemma goes to Kindergarten. She had some rules for our wedding. 1. She has to dance with me 2. She has to wear a white dress and I told her that I had to have her hand out programs at the wedding! And Carsteyn has decided that he has to get a new tie to wear! I love those two kids. So cute.

We finished off the week helping Mom and Dad at the farm. I helped sort in the morning while Matt drove the payloader up to the field and in the afternoon when I met with our realtor and drove back to Dickinson, Matt helped give shots to the calves. I was glad he was there to help and glad that they gave some hands on training. When I got home, I had two kitties who had a present from Michele. She had gotten them catnip blankets. Oh my, were they happy. The funny thing is that Michele gave them to us at Randy and Descie's, where their cats attempted to take them out of the bag and even tried to drag them across the room! So when they got to TD and Lola, they couldn't wait to get them out. Oh and the rolling and the licking and the rubbing. Such happy cats!

58601-ing it.

So it’s more official, I live in Dickinson. I’ve been changing my address over to Matt and I’s place. It’s a slow tedious process that I’ve been getting better at, especially since I’ve already done it once this year. We are getting more settled in the house, the cats and I. Nike is still unhappy with the whole arrangement and has been known to demonstrate her feelings on occasion. I got a smack today after trying to arrange food bowls to better accommodate all three. Lola has taken to burying. We are now finding occasional lumps under the comforter where she has decided she’s going to escape to and take a nap. It’s happened at least three times the past week, I’ll admit it’s pretty cute. TonyDanza seems to be in a shell shock. He’s pretty clingy and doesn’t stray too far from me when I’m at home.

I’ve also learned some things about my beloved man since I’ve moved in. I’ll continue to highlight them as the need arises, but will present these as I discover them. He’s a pillow stealer. I’ve woken up a few nights with him grabbing the pillow that MY head is on and him pulling it towards him. AND if that does work and he can’t steal the pillow, he’ll sleep on my pillow, the one that my head is on. When confronted, he says it’s because he wants to be closer, I’m not buying that story yet. We’ve been getting more settled in and unpacking a car load as we bring it. It’s a slow process and I usually start a list of things to bring when we come back that we couldn’t fit in the current car load. It is helping the unpacking and sorting process as it’s slow going and trying to find places to fit things has become creative. The camper will be getting some updates but some things are just going. How many scales does a couple need? My toaster is crap, it’s going. Pictures will be a fight when we are ready to talk about these, and I think both of us are avoiding it; however it’s been so long on some of my things, I don’t even remember what they are, I’m excited to see them.

This past weekend we made a trip to Bismarck, we are getting the condo ready to sell. I’m not excited about it but know it’s a necessary thing and will be a huge cost saver. It’s just so wonderful and bright, makes me start dreaming about Matt and I’s forever house. We went through and did the first round of staging, I’ll wait to hear from the realtor now on what else should be done or if we are ready to list. I also tried on some dresses for Shantelle and Rick’s wedding. She’s having a fishing themed wedding, set for June, with sunshine yellow and tangerine orange. It’s been great planning and talking things out as we go regarding plans and tips. I’ll have my girls try on dresses soon.

Best meal: We cooked all weak, but I think I liked our taco’s the best.

ALM: (texting): Are you reliable enough to be my emergency contact? Are we there yet? MJR: 2 hours later ALM: Are you serious? You didn't respond to my text? MJR: What text? ALM: (look) MJR: Oh, that text, I was in a meeting. ALM: What if I was dieing! I called my mom and she answered on the FIRST ring!

One Big Happy Family

So it’s official, almost, I live in Dickinson. I say “almost” because I still have the condo and some things in Bismarck. It’s like I have a well furnished weekend home in the near metropolis. It’s more official now than before because the cats have come with me. TonyDanza and Lola are now living in Dickinson and we are one big happy family with Matt and Nike. When I say, we are one big happy family, I mean Matt and I are happy to be together, the felines are not. There was much carrying on and crying and hiss and yowling and screaming. And when we thought that it couldn’t get worse we saw hiding and punching and swiping and growling. I kept thinking I heard a jake break from the semi and I didn’t know where it was coming from until I realized it was coming from the cats, just because they felt like it. I’ll admit the first night was very hard, but since then we’ve made great progress, the hiding isn’t as bad and the screaming is happening with longer intervals between now.

So when I say I’m living in Bismarck, it means I’ve quit my job at Bold and had to say good bye to an amazing line up of clients and an equally unique roster of co-workers. They were all super good to me and it was hard to say good bye to certain parts and people. I will miss the creative sessions and the characters, that’s for sure. I started a consultant job at Job Service where I’ll be working with businesses and job seekers in Dickinson. I’m excited to start the new opportunity but I know it will be a big change from what I was doing at the agency.

My last weekend in Bismarck was “packed”. Well, we didn’t pack my things per se, but we filled it up with events and people. Matt and I had our last official Bismarck date on Friday at our favorite Bismarck restaurant, the Peacock. We love the martinis (when I say “we”, I mean I), we love the Mediterranean nachos (and I mean “we”), and the beer options make Matt happy. We filled our bellies and went home to bed to wake up early to go hunting. I played guide and Mom and Dad played host to Matt who celebrated opening Pheasant in orange with a shotgun. He limited out both days and I made an excellent “flusher”. Saturday night we had the official parental meet and greet. Our parents had their first official date with wine and roast. It was fun to get them together and talk plans. On Sunday, we didn’t play lazy either, we met my aunt, Wendy and Grandma at Mom and Dad’s for brunch. It was good to catch up with her and I was excited that she accepted our invitation to read at our wedding ceremony. After noon, we headed into town and took in the Seven Seas Bridal Show. We actually felt pretty good when we left as we asked a few questions, saw a few things, but didn’t see anything exciting or new that we missed. Matt did see an ice punch bowl that he was trying to make a case for, I said we’d see, I hope his hopes aren’t high. We ended the night with the cat convey and official meeting.

Best meal: Red and white wine with roast beef and mashed potatoes with mashed sweet potatoes and scalloped corn.

Breaking News!

It’s official. We are moving, again. Again. AHHHHH-gain.

This is a bittersweet move. I’m going back to Dickinson and moving in with Matt. (Don’t tell Grandma Elaine, she told me if I ever live with a boy, lie to her.) We’ve decided enough is enough. No more driving, no more back and forth, no more mine and yours, we are combining kitchens, bedrooms, and kitties.

That’s right, TonyDanza and Lola will now have Nike. Nike, a fickle feline, who runs Matt’s life, beats up her litter box, neighborhood dogs, and unsuspecting birds. She comes and goes as she pleases but has a personality all her own. She’s not a cuddle bug like mine, unless you are Matt and then she’s all about cuddling. Matt and I are a bit nervous about this official introduction and I know there will be a cat fight (literally) and that can’t be avoided. We’re opening for 1 fight and then some Mexican standoffs and that be the end. We’ll see.

We took the first load out this past weekend. Yea for parents. My mom came and helped box things up last week, until I didn’t let her. Then Matt’s parents came and loaded a bunch on the trailer including my couch, coffee chest, bedside table, dresser, closet items, boxes, and my garage compactor. They were patient with us this weekend as we worked our way through our items and organized. We have a long road of “conversations” in front of us as we work to combine two houses with two separate styles, but in the end, it will all work out. Also huge shout out of appreciation to Michele and Randy for cleaning and taking care of the litter box too to help us out as we continued to settle and unpack. That was amazing.

We also took in the Dickinson Rural Fire Department Sports Stag, which raises money to benefit the department. Great meal, was last year too. It’s great that Michele and Randy can come down and support Matt. And it’s awesome for me as I have someone to analyze the auction items and talk with during the event, if they weren’t there, I’d be all on my lonesome.

I also have had time to work some much-needed lunches into my last weeks in Bismarck. I had lunch with Grandma Dar, Aunt Grace, and Cousin Kate this past week. Great to catch up and I hate that the miles means that this will happen less. I’ve somewhat taken it for granted that these people opportunities were here and I wish I had done it more often.

Best meal: Baron of beef at the stag.

“Don’t put that thing near me, it’ll go crazy.” - Randy said to Matt, who had just found a stud finder in his tool box.

Making my birthday last!

So I'm playing catch up a bit, but I'll tell you about last week's great weekend. But then again, it was a birthday weekends amd they always are great.

I celebrated my first 29th birthday with one of my favorite meals (potato soup) with two of my favorite people (mom and dad).

From there, Matthew showed up on my doorstep on Saturday and I finally have become an Elite coffee drinker! I got a Keurig for my birthday! I’m so excited. It will be perfect for me! We did some running around town and then headed out to my parents house.

For supper, we had a great night, as it was Mom and Dad, Matt and I, and Alaina and her boyfriend, Robert. They enjoyed steak fingers and those that were interested enjoyed smoked salmon that Matt prepped! MMMMMMMM, this girl loves some salmon!

We finished off the night with a game of Whoonu, which is a family favorite!

Sunday was a catch up day as we assessed my belongs that will one day be intermingled with Matt’s things, did some running around, got Matt his birthday dehydrator, and ended up watching “Iron Lady”, I ended up crying at the end. I’m such a sucker for an emotional pull. I don’t know how Matt puts up with me.

Favorite meal of the weekend: salmon, I love how Matt smokes that fish!

“I don’t know why you didn’t just let me get a nice movie about kids killing each other.” –ALM crying referring to “The Hunger Games”

Californication...

Our final day was sad. I determined I hate leaving California.

We all loaded in Jason’s truck to head back to San Jose. The best part was that we stopped at Sonic, which sounds silly to be excited about but Matt and I live too north of the nearest Sonic and had never experienced it. So we stopped. I think I love the Cherry Limeade. I’ve tried to duplicate it; so far I haven’t 100% succeeded.

And then after that the worse thing happened. Jason left us at the airport. Kicked us out of the truck and dropped our bags on the curb and left. Boo. I wasn’t ready to be left. I wasn’t ready to be kicked out. I wanted more vacation! Don’t kick me out!

And then Matt made me go in the airport. On the plane and away. Our best flight was the final one into Bismarck as we had an exit row all to ourselves. Mom picked us up from the airport and dropped us off at home, so vacation officially over. The only thing we have left is memories, pictures, and our Chart House menu.

I do have to say it was another week where I realize I hit the jackpot with Matt’s family. Not only have his parents been amazing to me, but also Jason, Sara, lil Jason, and Kevin were awesome hosts and really showed us a good time. Letting us stay, giving us a vehicle to use, directions and recommendations that were awesome, not charging us for phone charging or showers, feeding us…they were wonderful and I’m so glad it worked and we made the trip. I’m excited to become part of their family and introduce them to mine!

Also, I have an addition from a previous day, I forgot to mention how Sara and I, with Kevin as our foundation (and the best cheerleader ever), kicked Jason and Matt's behinds in trivial pursuit. And not just a little, but a LOT. They even had to get nasty about J.K. Rowling so we got nasty back with Tea (versus Chamomile Tea). And don't ask either boy about Alan Shepard. But you can ask us girls about chickens and marigolds! We didn't only win the first game, but the second! Winners! Girl Power!

Best meal of the day: cherry limeade. (it’s not a meal but I could make it one)

“That lady in front of us ordered a diet cherry limeade, what is she thinking?” Jason

Wish they all could be California....

California Mondays are way better than normal Mondays.

We woke up and headed into town for some shopping and exploring. Second stop was Ross. Loved it (First stop was lox and cream cheese bagels, when on a coast you gotta enjoy)! At Ross, Matt bought a shirt or two and so did I. Next stop was Marshalls, Matt was in and out of the dressing room more than I was. In fact, I didn’t step into the dressing room at all! He bought a couple pairs of shorts and I bought a microwaveable bacon tray. From there we went to Sports Authority and looked at the yoga stuff, the camping stuff, and of course, the golf stuff! Matt was disappointed they didn’t have any hockey things! Ha!

For lunch we stopped at one of the first sushi restaurants that Matt had ever eaten at. Iki Ricky’s…or something like that. I ordered a roll and then we split a plate of fish pieces. We tried crab, salmon, fish, octopus, squid, and on and on. I also liked the tempura and the tea. It was probably fun to see the look of shock when they set the whole plate down in front of us, because it was huge!

All shopped out, and on a budget, we headed to fisherman’s wharf. What a cute little tourist’s spot. There were a few shops and we looked at them a bit. We had a caricature done, which I was actually pleasantly surprised with and then looked around a bit. My favorite was the otter that was hanging out under the docks. He would swin down and grab or mussel or something come back up and knock it on the bottom of the bottom to open it. After it was open, he’d swim on back and enjoy the “fruits of his labor”. How smart! Before leaving we did stop at the salt water taffy store, Matt bought some chocolate covered cherries and I had chocolate covered strawberries. Mmmmm.

We finished the day off at Cannery Row. We took a stroll along the length of the walk, stopping in shops and even having a wine tasting. We both picked out a favorite there, his red, mine apricot. We had a 6:30 dinner reservation at the Chart House(recommendation of Sara and Jason’s). It was a beautiful fancy restaurant right on the water. We officially celebrated our engagement and they even prepped the menu for us with our names on it! We started off with an appetizer of mussels in a tomato wine reduction. Matt enjoyed the salad bar which he shared a few bites with me. For main course, I had the mixed seafood grill (crab cake, salmon, shrimp) and he had the NY strip with a side of grilled shrimp. We each had a cocktail and finished off the meal with a giant slice of key lime pie. We left fat and happy. What a great meal and it was perfect to have a stroll back Cannery Row before heading home.
We finished the night off with Jason, Sara, and little Jason. To top it off, Jason made good on his promise to get us a cake topper. We placed a bid on Ebay and ordered “First Dance” to arrive before October 10th. I like how the man handles responsibility!

Best meal: mmmm, I can still taste that salmon from the Chart House.

ALM: “Do you know that when otters sleep they hold their mates hand, so that they don’t get separated?
MJR: “Yes, I know that, Dear.”
ALM: “You’re my otter, because it doesn’t matter where we float, as long as I have you, I’m good.”
MJR: “Yes, Dear.”

California Wine Down.

On Sunday, we woke up and enjoyed the final morning in Rio Vista as Kevin’s spread. He was amazing to have us in his home, share his puppies and pizza, and the visiting was great. We took off and headed back to Monterey but did make a lunch stop at “In-n Out Burger” before we got back to town.

Upon return, we decided it was time to partake in the local wine crop! We visited a few tasting rooms. There is this perception that you go to where the grapes are grown, see the vines, and then partake in the wine that is happening right there. That’s not the case and after some thinking about this, it’s really okay. The vines are grown in rural areas in California where nothing is really surrounding it and then they have tasting rooms where locals and tourists, such as ourselves, can tour the town, pay the price and sample wine after wine and just walk door to door. That’s what we did. We stopped at about 4 tasting houses. We started getting smart, we split a tasting either shared it or Matt enjoyed his dry reds and I took in the sweets. It was pretty brilliant once we got the hang of it. One thing I discovered from our adventure, I do not like Chardonnays. I’ll stick with my fruit wines and other whites! Here’s my favorites: Apricot, White Merlot, and then an almond champagne!

We headed back to Sara and Jason’s that night and enjoyed Sara’s Chicken piccata. We did think it was “fresh” chickens, but we were informed that they were not the chickens we’d seen earlier in the week! It was great and I wouldn’t kick Sara out of the kitchen ever. We recouped on the couch and just enjoyed some light conversation and the harmonic tones of little Jason!

Best meal of the day: chicken piccata with asparagus and artichokes!

“We won’t ever enjoy a bottle of wine together will we?” –MJR as he drank a cab and I had a glass of cranberry spice.

California Girl!

Saturday was boys vs girls day.

Matt went off to get schooled in golf by Kevin at the Rio Vista course and Sara and I went off to tour Rio Vista and run errands.

I saw the town and ate at Foster’s, which has the most amazing taxidermy collection I’ve ever seen, including a full elephant head with tusks, trunk, and ears. Other things included a giraffe, rhino, hippo, deer, buffalo, bison, moose, alligator, cats (not domestic) and on and on and on. I ordered a salmon Caesar salad, it was so good, even thinking about it now, I get a craving.

After lunch, Sara and I spent some time with little Jason and the dog pack: Cyrus, Winnie, and Gracie. I determined the best thing was to get one of them howling (Cyrus) and they’d start all howling. HAHA! Still makes me giggle a bit thinking about it. Sara and I had some time to kill and because dogs are dogs, we noticed that Cyrus poo-ed a Cyrus size poo. In an attempt to avoid it, we took a decorative rock cover and placed it over it. I told Sara, want to watch Matt gag, we’ll save it for later. Sure enough, when the boys got home from golfing, we settled in to hear about their course-trauma. Afterward, I convinced Matt to move the “rock” back to where it was suppose to be, uncovering the horse pile! Oh, we laughed! The best part wasn’t that we got Matt to gag but we made it a double and also convinced Kevin to uncover the “treasure” that was hidden! Only time I’ve had so much fun with poo.

The best part of the evening was the fun with the pizza oven. Kevin has got a great set up for pizza, all the way from the dough flattener to the wood fired oven. Mmmmmmm. Sara and I sat and enjoyed the pizza buffet that continued to come in our direction. I think the sausage and pepperoni were my favorite! The boys did an amazing job cooking and it was awesome to watch.

ALM: “You’re going to grow up and be stinky and fart aren’t you, because you are a boy.”
Little Jason: “I’m a kitty.”
ALM: “And you stay that way!”

CA + ALM = :)

Okay, so day 2, wake up, shower, head into town.

For breakfast: Bagels loaded with Lox, tomatoes, and capers. So good! We get this “treat” so rarely in ND….this was the best breakfast for the month of September!

Matt had brought his clubs and with the help of Sara, who supplied her clubs as well as a fashionable golfing outfit for me, we took in a great little par 3 course on pebble beach. The longest hole was 104 yards. I basically only used 4 clubs: 7,8, pitching, and putter. I didn’t do too bad. I was happy and for the first time ever, I played a full 18. Matt had a bit rougher luck. He lost 3 balls, an impossible possible feat when playing a par-3 course and hit a parked car on a drive. We did play through a herd of deer, which both of us found amazingly distracting. The best part of the game for me was having a hot caddy haul my clubs around for me. Thanks, Sweetheart!

From there we decided to check out Pebble Beach’s Golf Course, where the US Open is played. We had drinks at the bar and went and watched a few groups come in on the 18th. It’s right on the ocean and Matt’s goal is to someday play that course. Beautiful place but it does come with a hefty price tag.

We had a bugger of a time finding a parking spot in Carmel, but finally did and made our way down the beach. We did get a bit too close but it was beautiful. Jason even showed us a sunset there the first night.

From there, we had a snack at the “Hog’s Breath Inn”, which is owned by Clint Eastwood, former mayor of Carmel.  Awesome food, Matt had an artichoke soup with a pulled pork sandwich and I had a Monterey Chicken sandwich, complete with avocados! After strolling around town a bit, we headed back to Sara and Jason’s and then took off to Rio Vista to stay with Matt’s uncle Kevin.

Although the ride had heavy traffic, we did laugh a ton as we took Jason and Sara’s dog, Cyrus, with us. Cyrus is not your average dog. I’ve seen horses smaller than him and to top it off he’s learned how to lean into the turns. Oh my gosh, it was hilarious to have him between Matt and I while we drove through the country side and over the mountain. I was by-far the smallest person in the truck. It definitely made for an eventful ride and then Matt and I were trying to figure out the crops growing in the fields (strawberries, tomatoes, lettuce, oranges, etc….the only one we knew for sure was corn!).

We got to Rio Vista after a few hours and it was great to see Kevin’s house, which Matt loves. We started a fire and enjoyed visiting while we waited for our Pizza Factory pizza to show up.

Best Meal: breakfast…mmmmm I love some salmon.

“You look so tiny next to Cyrus and Matt. It should be a book called “Riding with Giants”!”- Sara Remynse

The better CA....California NOT Canada

So I’m crabby.
I was fine on Tuesday, but I’m crabby. The difference is on Tuesday, we were in California, today, we are not. Boo.

What a great trip. First, I got to spend time with Matt, bonus. Second, I got to see California, a place I’ve never been to before. Third, I got to meet some of Matt’s amazing family. I’ve thought before I’ve hit a jackpot entering into his family, but it was confirmed again to me.

We arrived about 12ish on Thursday. Jason picked us up from San Jose’s airport. We climbed in and I was whisked away to “In-n-Out Burger”. I love “local” things so it was great to try something that I hadn’t before. We all ordered double-doubles, animal style, and split an order of fries. I know I disappointed Matt because we typically exercise a 75%/25% policy with my meals. I eat 75%, he finishes off 25%. This time it wasn’t the case, it was a 100%/0%. Mmmmmmm!

From there, we headed to Cannery Row and took in the aquarium. It was fun to see tuna, sharks, jelly fish, sea turtles, and more. My favorite was probably the sea horses. They were so delicate and different. We also touched a sting ray. It was a great facility and it was easy to see why Jason and Sara (Matt’s cousin and wife) went there with their son (Jason) all the time!

We next went and had supper, where I got to meet Sara at the restaurant she works at (A.W. Shucks). It was a great dinner. My martini was great, my fish and chips were so good, and I enjoyed the oysters too, which I knew was Matt’s favorite.

The best part of the day involved a little wedding twist. I told Jason that I wanted to hit up some of the antique places as I’d like to find a cake topper for the wedding. Here I’ve got to give it to Jason and his tenacity in accomplishing a goal. We looked for cake toppers and he came up with suggestions like crazy. I think my favorites included the kissing kittens, the colonial couples (in various outfits), the masks, the foot tall Dutch people, the native American candles, and the rollerskating trophy topper. I laughed so much at so many of the options. Jason took it to a new level that night as we sat and visited and he found toppers online and screened them by Matt and I to see what we liked. Sure, anyone can pick out a topper, but who knew I’d have so much fun picking ours out!
We ended the night just visiting and getting to know each other! Perfect start to our holiday stay!

Best meal of the day: tough call….fish and chips or in-n-out burger! I can’t decide, don’t make me.

To Old Amanda.....

As I sit on the eve of my first 29th birthday, I want to write a letter to myself, for when I get old.

Dear Old Amanda,

In case you’ve forgotten, you’ve had some pretty great times.
You’ve had some awesome experiences that many people will never get to see. You’ve traveled to various parts of the US, it’s okay to keep traveling, you are really good at it, just pack lighter and smarter. You’ve traveled to various countries, don’t stop. Who are you kidding if you think you don’t love to see and do. Fill your passport up with stamps and your entertainment center with photo albums.

Here’s some more advice to remind you of where you came from:
  • Drink a Wonder Woman every once in a while as tribute to the wild summer.
  • Jam out to Elton John and remember you are an old soul.
  • Remember your passions, you say you want to work on your writing, so write. You say you want to read some of the best books, so read. You think you want to start art again, work on that. Remember the things that you love to pour your heart into and don’t let those go as they are a part of you. Remember your elders, they have shaped who you are.
  • Try to do a cartwheel once a year and it’s okay to admit that it’s gotten harder.
  • Keep in touch with friends, life gets busy but it’s the relationships that you love.
  • Remember the crapholes that you lived in, like Chad’s basement, or the duplex without air conditioning.
  • Remember how wonderful your brand new condo was the first night you stayed in it.
  • Remember how you appreciated a baler with autotwine. Your kids won’t appreciate the story, but they will be in a unique pool of children where they had a mother that baled hay, shoveled grain, and hitched a ground feed trailer (in the wind) to feed a bunch of cows that appreciated this action with their mouth.
  • Remember that the first thing that you really remember buying was “Spud” the sheep. You paid $15 (mostly in change) and he was beautiful.
  • Remember your first vehicle was a 85 chevy s-10 that was covered in dirt.

You’ve come a long way, old lady. And as you look back on your years, no matter where you are. Know you’ve been loved like crazy by many people in your life and that’s hard to beat. It's okay to be eccentric (spit and wear purple), but let's not get too carried away.

Love,
Young Amanda

Love is an orange tabby.

So I’ve spent of time lately with my laptop, for one reason or another, a ton of tulle has been involved too let’s say. TonyDanza loves it. He’ll sit on my lap just in front of the keyboard. I’ve felt so bad lately as we’ve been going a bunch and haven’t really had any down days, winter may change that but I know he’s such a cuddle bug and needs attention. Both of my cats definitely ask for laps and attention. It’s hard to go to Matt’s as Nike could care less about my lap and cuddling. I don’t realize how much I look for my cats until I don’t have them around. It’s easy to write this now as he’s purring in my lap versus breaking the head off my scarecrow, which sits on the entertainment system.

This past weekend I was in Dickinson and we spent time with friends. Brendan and Claudia were there for National Guard Duty, so Claudia was great to take to the Pride of Dakota showcase as she is actually interested in going and doesn’t drag her feet and just wait to leave, like someone else I know. We also went out Saturday night to hang out with some of the firehall guys who did a rib cook, and what girl in her right mind turns away ribs.

Mom and I got a little dress shopping in. It was exciting and fun. I did tell Matt that I wasn’t going to go traditional in the dress, maybe a deep scarlet color, haha, that’s when I got the “look”. No, he should expect to see some shade of white, some dress with some design with maybe some lace or some beading or some chiffon or some train or some frill or some pretty, but for sure some white.

We are prepping for California this coming weekend. I’m excited. Life has been such a whirlwind with work and things since the engagement. It will be awesome to meet Sara and Jason and their son, see Kevin, and see California. I love our trips and I also love the non-stop time that we have together.

Best meal: ribs with a side of ribs and ribs for dessert, and they let me take ribs home for leftovers.

Getting too Old to Deal with a Cat’s New Tricks

So TonyDanza has really been showing his personality lately.
He is still snuggling under the covers any chance he gets.
He now eats his food like potato chips. He will scoop 3 or 4 pieces onto the ground, eat them and then scoop some more.
But his biggest thing is that he desperately wants to stay in the room at night instead of getting kicked out when I go to sleep. He figures that he’ll hide under the bed and be very quiet.

Now last night, Matt came to stay as he had a Bismarck meeting this morning. We went out and pre-celebrated his birthday. Had dinner and then came home. I went to bed early, being on central time, he came later. He had prevented TonyDanza from coming in the room to avoid the “cat luring out” session. He laid down and commented about the window open in the living room and that it was cold. I asked him to please shut that. He got up, and didn’t shut the door when he left.

Now, for those of you that don’t know TonyDanza, he’s a cat of opportunity. Unlike Lola, he didn’t feel the need to watch Matt close the window. He instead saw that Matt opened a door and hustled himself right in and under the bed, despite my snickering.

Now re-enter Matt who has realized what has happened, which brings forward more snickering from me. Now we have a few tactics to try to get TonyDanza out.
1. Open the catfood closet
2. Open the fridge
3. With fridge open, shake a bag of cheese
4. Grab a treat container, but to avoid rewarding him, we don’t give him treats.
Now Matt tries each of these, but alas, the orange tabby doesn’t come out from the bed.
More snickering.
Matt figures out a new tactic, he puts cat food on the floor (simulating the sound of treats hitting the floor). TD bolts out and all I hear is “Sucker, that was cat food!”

Best meal: Spicy Chicken Tortellini at Bistro

Measure a Year?

This past weekend we celebrated our pre-anniversary. We are sitting at about a year out from our big day. We checked the location for temp, view, and location of sun. We’ve paid for our chairs, we’ve started looking at budget things, we put a few more deposits down, and we’ve started price checking and shopping.

This past week we looked at DJ’s and tux shops. We think we have our DJ and we have some ideas of tux shops. We will be matching rosewood and wine to the charcoal suits.

In the mean time, we have life happening, like it’s someone’s 29th birthday this coming week. I had picked up a new golf bag and modified it a bit and had every intention of presenting to him when he became older than me, but while running errands around town, the damn stinker opened the trunk (where I thought it would be hiding safely) to put some things in there and saw it! Damn it! Was glad to give him something that he loved and brought a big smile to his face.

He even got to use it already. He went out to Riverwood while mom and I went to a friend/relative baby shower for Kayla and baby Reagan. Mom and I were the big winners. I won the price is right game (was only off by $.44) and Mom won the Guessthecheeriosinthebottle game (was only off by 5). Aside from seeing Kayla’s happy face, the best part was to see Grandma and Aunt Jo “studying” the rubber ducky spout protector, which is so babies don’t bash their heads. They didn’t understand the purpose of this “toy” because once the baby bashes his/her head, he/she won’t do it again! Kids these days have it so much easier!

I was able to show my place to Grandma too. I still don’t have things on the wall, but who knows if I will. I dressed TonyDanza up for her visit but Matt was not impressed and took off his bandana. Some people just don’t understand dressing to impress.

We finished the weekend ripping up the most memorable carpet I’ve had in my life. My mother is replacing 90% of her carpet. We started work on the office, then moved to her guest bedroom (which only took 6 cans of paint to finish) and now we are working our way to the living room! It was pretty shocking to see Dad grab a corner and rip, reminded me when we decided to take off the wallpaper and Gary just reached over and ripped. I’ll go out tonight and put back her furniture and it will look so nice. I’m so excited to see these updates, just like seeing “our” fancy new TV set up and HD coming though.

Best Meal: Pre-anniversary dinner of walleye and “rice in the weeds” at the Walrus.

All you need is Love.

So sometimes, those Beatles know what they are talking about.

I gotta admit that Matt and I have always been in a good place, he’s been a great partner for me but this past week (or two) has reminded me multiple times why I said yes to him. Wedding planning is not for the faint at heart. We are planning a wedding simultaneously with another couple and it’s fun to share stories, we both do talking points and ask questions and compare notes but my favorite is being able to share with the other bride how Matt and I are working through the plans, together.

So, date – check, venues – check, preliminary lists- check, colors – check, officiate – check, families notified – check, photographer – check, and this past week, two more checks, friends and decorator. We finally were able to proclaim to the world what was going on and I love the reactions and support for the two of us, I fully expected some ribbing from the firehalls guys, and we weren’t disappointed. They also offered to help with the theme of the wedding: firefighter complete with bunker gear for the tuxs. But it was also nice to hear the congratulations and excitement from others.

We also went to the decorator this weekend, together. I had to laugh when she said that she rarely gets to meet the groom and here my groom has a distinct personality with distinct opinions, and I love that he has them and brings them to the table. We worked through a few ideas and came up with the preliminary design and I’m excited to see it set up and it come to life next year. Also gave me an idea of where we are going and things we will need as we keep going and planning. I loved that our decorator had excitement and was earnestly invested in what we were doing and I think about the headache and hassle she’s going to take off our plates and I’m relieved already. AND THEN I think about how BEAUTIFUL it’s going to be.

We went camping this past weekend, probably the last camping weekend of the season, at Beulah Bay. It was great to spend a few uninterrupted days together and then add a boat and a fire with some great people, talk about a success. We were a bit unorganized, and that drove me crazy but I guess we have a few things on our mind.

Best Meal: smoked salmon with citrus and dill and steamed green beans. AND the best part, there was leftover salmon that Matt let me take. That’s how I know he loves me.

Venue Shopping

Then the search was on.

Here's where we started...with lists, spreadsheets, conversations, prices, calculators, books, and extended phone conversations. Yikes, we didn't realize that we got into the game behind. We found this out when I started making calls asking about venue details and dates were booking up. Suddenly a thought to start planning down the road brought us to an express path to start making some decisions.

1. Venue
We made a list and took a few personal tours. Because we aren't being traditional, we needed a ceremony spot as well as a reception spot. Matt and I also agreed that we wanted an outdoor ceremony.
So instead, let's change this.
1. 2 Venues
So after our tours we looked at what we liked and that eliminated 10-12 because the halls that we liked were only available on 9-21.

Or so we thought.

I called today to book the date, and over the past 5 days, someone had swooped in and stole our spot. Talk about a disappointing morning. And then my mother asked a little question. What if you change the date?

While we wanted the fall temps and the fall leaves, we wanted a specific venue and I also wanted to ensure that my mother would make it and enjoy our wedding despite the "outtage" happening at Great River Energy (she'll be working 8 weeks of 6 ten hour days and both 9-21 and 10-12 were in this 8 week period). By bumping up we were guaranteed two of things, and we'll cross our fingers on the weather.

So we have a date, SEPTEMBER 7th!
And this is how it's playing out. Ceremony at Hawktree Golf Course with reception to follow at Radisson in Bismarck!

"Okay, so with this deposit, you've reserved our Galleria room on September 7, 2013, for the Moser/Remynse Wedding." - Lisa, our rep at the Radisson.

Bells will be ringing...

And then we were engaged and it was the best secret of all.

It was exciting to have these waves of excitement hit. The fact that he’d asked, that I’d answered yes, that he had been ring shopping since June. That he’d spent hours poring over books to find one that he’d like that he thought fit me. That he’d gone through my jewelry box to ensure that he had the right size that it wouldn’t have to be resized. To realize that I was his one. To realize that he was part of my forever. To suddenly feel that everything was different yet better. To know that our future suddenly became a lot more closer. And to think, we sat there with all of these answers and questions together, just the two of us, for that little bit right after he’d ask.

It’s no wonder that we showed up to my parents’ house giggly and distracted. It was so nice to see my mother’s smile, my sister’s excitement and hear my father’s congratulations when we broke the news. There was similar more animated response from Michele and Randy, including tears of joy and fist pumps of pre-grandparent actualization.

We started sharing with our family and friends since our parents were in on the secret. It was fun to share the story and start the plans. We did get a bit overwhelmed at times but he was quick to tell me that we need to enjoy these initial moments. So we did, we lived it up and didn’t get too far into the details.

We did look at dates but had a few restrictions:
Feb, March, April = calving
May = A.I.ing, mud, and seeding,
June, July, August = too hot for Matt’s taste to be in a tux in the sun
November, December, January = too cold for my taste to be in a wedding dress in the snow
So that leaves September and October. Matt’s and mine birthday are in September, so those weekends are out and after October 19th we face a likelihood of cold and snow. So we narrowed it down to 9-21 and 10-12. It all depends on if we want to get married before I turn 30th or if we want to get married despite opening pheasant weekend. On our way out of town, we picked up a few books and got to talking about plans. He even had me pick out a magazine, which he opened before I did!

Best Meal: Randy’s celebratory Friday night pizza.

Big Questions, Easy Answers.

It’s funny how 4 words can change your life.

We met on a Friday but we got engaged on a Thursday. It’s true. I still look back on that moment and it still gives me stomach butterflies. We were baling for my dad and I blew a baring and the baler started smoking. We took it over to the neighbors with mom and dad to put it out. We decided that the bale from the field needed to be pulled, so Matt and I decided to head back over to point it out to Ray, who was pulling the bale with the loader tractor.

At this point, I need to mention that conversation that we had been having. We’d been talking about friends, relationships, and timelines. I made some comment about “if I get married but then corrected myself, WHEN I get married, because I will, I just don’t know who yet.” Well, Matthew James took this as a cue to ask about my timeline and what I had planned for in life. I told him that I wouldn’t play ball, he couldn’t know my timeline because that’s not how it’s done. He said, I think I’ll fit in your timeline and dropped the ring on the counsel in the middle of his truck in the middle of the “bucholtz”, “curve” field, surrounded by freshly baled oats bales that we had just made just across the fence from my father’s herd.

I won’t lie, I sat there stammering and stunned. I wasn’t expecting it and he said that he was going to wait to do it tomorrow but he was excited and this felt right. I did have to ask if he was serious and with a few tears, I said gave him the answer he wanted to hear and he shakingly slipped the ring on my finger.

“Yes.” –Amanda

Hearts and Home

Another week and we are on the front side of the weekend. This weekend will be pretty slow though, I won’t be making it back to Dickinson and because Matt’s working, we are spending it apart. I hate those weekends, they are few and far between and for good reason, I hope to get a bit of things done in the meantime. I have some serious housecleaning to do. I’m 95% moved in, just need to organize and place. And as of today the condo is officially finished, the construction crew finished off the patio. Feels good to be finished!

A shadow on the week was Aunt Grace had a heart attack. I’m glad that she’s officially out of the hospital and that she went in when she did. These serious events remind me of what an amazing family I have and how wonderful it is to be so close in order to support each other. I’ll continue to worry about her and her family as they recuperate but I’m glad that it turned out better than it could have.

Best meal: Dinner out with a great friend, Shantelle, at Fiesta Villa.

R&R and DRFD

A long weekend, finally. Not by holiday but by necessity. The past month at work has been super long and painful for myself and I also see the stress building up in Matt. Funny, even as I sit here, I am listening to Kid Rock’s “All Summer Long” from our neighbor who is working on his boat and it makes me grit my teeth, ha! I’ve determined working with some things so intently will ruin them for you. I never want to work at a Mexican restaurant, McDonald’s, or for Elton John.

It also seems that us sleeping in a camper is synonymous with rainfall. It’s hard to believe we have pre-drought conditions because the past couple times we’ve gotten out in the camper I’ve been awaken to the sound of rain on the tin, reminds me of a Judds song. I don’t look at this as awful, I’m glad that I don’t date a tenter. And until he awakens and becomes nervous from the storm, I don’t get myself worked up.

The other joys of camping include the people that we go with. We have our usual group of suspects. I did enjoy the fact that this time around they have become ultra-concerned with the fact that Matt and I aren’t engaged/planning a party, which they are looking forward to. The mention of new dresses and how good they look in tuxes also seem to be a huge advantage to our matrimony situation. It seems that laughs and stories don’t stray too far from the group. I couldn’t tell what they enjoyed more, the idea of a party or the squirming that Matt was doing from the whole conversation.

This camping trip had a purpose, it was dive weekend. The Dickinson Rural Fire Department’s dive team went out for training and simulations with their gear and with the new dive boat. I was officially the first female to jump off the roof of the dive boat. I don’t think I got style points for my jackknife but if I did, it was more points for that than my swim back to the boat.

Tonight will be our last night and we’ll head back Sunday morning. I hate the head back part. I hate the end of the weekend part because that means that we do that good-bye thing and I also do the drive back home thing, which leads to the back-to-work thing. Boo to being a grown up. Sure they make it sound good by having perks like drinking, bars, smoking, voting, R rated movies, tattoos/piercings, and personal consent but then they are quick to hide bills, work, and responsibility.

After cleaning the camper and talking about the coming week. I chose Matt's "outfit" for speaking on Monday in front of city commissioners. After this is worked out....
MJR: What do you think the fall season colors will be?
ALM: Bwahahahahaahahahahaha!
MJR: I don't understand why you are laughing.

Best Meal: Grilled porkchops and cucumbers with dressing after having a few cocktails.

Farewell July!

Beginning of August and I got to admit although some have complained about this summer's heat, the only complaint I have is when I see my energy bill. I'm loving the summer and the sun. I've even got some light tan lines, which isn't always easy for me.

With the start of August we say good-bye to the Fair in July. It was a record breaking year for attendance and concerts but it felt good to see everything come to completion. I did spend a day up there with a camera guy, a golf cart, and a pile of permission wavers. Being there did remind me of the good ol' days at the fair with a couple cows and a camper in the lower lot. What a great experience for my parents to give me and I look back with such a fond nostalgia. Aside from the memories, my other favorite fair thing is the food. We recorded a bunch of it made but I was a bit disappointed to not have enough time to sample my favorites. I also was excited to see a friendly face show up too! Aunt Grace and Aaron were up for the day and for the concert. I even saw Aaron while I was at the concert. I couldn't get him behind the stage with me but we could visit and I tried to get him a good pic.

Despite getting home late, we took off early the next morning to Fargo to spend some time with Jani and Jerry. It was so good to see them and catch up a bit. We even had a few drinks. Matt played bartender for Jani and him. Jani was very happy that they enjoy the same gin!

Only downfall of the week was the call that I got at 11:00 on Monday night. Matt's mom, Michele, took a fall from the attic. She shattered her scapula/shoulder blade and also did some damage to her neck. Talk about a scare, I know Matt was nervous and anxious to hear updates and good news and when things like this happen it's apparent that Dickinson may be too far away. She has some serious recovery time ahead of her and she and Randy are in our thoughts. I do have to admit getting/dragging info out of Matt can sometimes drive me crazy. We'll work on that!

I have an addition to last week's blog. Someone was very upset that I didn't include "his" cat in the "cat update". I hated to remind him that I update on the cats that I live with but I'll give him this one.
Nike: the bruiser. She is continuing to beat things up; the neighborhood box, her water fountain, the neighborhood cats, the rhubarb next door, and her self-cleaning litter box.

7-28
ALM: I met the sweetest guy who is headoverheels with his wife at the fair. He went on and on and on about her but what killed me is how he started it. "I met her on a Thursday and by Saturday I knew she was the one and that was 39 years ago."
MJR: I met you on a Friday.
ALM: That's because the city meeting was always held on a Friday.
MJR: But I remember that it was a Friday.
ALM: I don't think you get the point of the story.
MJR: I did, I met YOU on a Friday.
ALM: (sigh) (eyes rolling)

Best meal: Cannelloni at the Speak Easy, which is Jani's favorite place. I also enjoyed Matt's seafood pasta, which I was glad he shared. We also took in the martini menu and I had the dirty monkey martini!

"The family. We were a strange little band of characters trudging through life sharing diseases and toothpaste, coveting one another's desserts, hiding shampoo, borrowing money, locking each other out of our rooms, inflicting pain and kissing to heal it in the same instant, loving, laughing, defending, and trying to figure out the common thread that bound us all together." -Erma Bombeck

Cat Update

Lola: I emptied her favorite box. This has upset her since boxes appear to be leaving the apartment and this one has now moved closer to the door. It did have sweaters in it, so I haven’t needed it. It’s now empty, that adds a new layer of fun because she will wiggle her way into it and play in the inside. I went to take the box out yesterday and someone immediately jumped on top of it. She has a variety of special poses, the one that makes me laugh is when she rests her chest against the box and lets her legs dangle over the side.

TonyDanza: Two things on him.
1. I have found some of his dress up collars. His company collar, which is red came right out of the wash and on him. He loves it. Matt didn’t think it was cool and thought it made him look silly. I told him to shut up and that it didn’t. Here’s the more funny part. I also found his bowtie and immediately put it on him. The last time he wore it he had a smaller water bowl. This time he managed to dunk the entire bow into the bowl. It was pretty sad to have a droopy bow tie.
2. He’s been into hiding under the bed. Him and Lola get kicked out every night because I believe in sleep and they think it’s fun to play around 4 am. He doesn’t like to get kicked out. By hiding under the bed he thinks he’ll get shut in because he’s sneaky and doesn’t think that I know that he’s there!
