This week we are in full fall swing. Sure, I've decorated the front, we have Len's Halloween costume, and we've been to a football game, but we officially "winterized" the garden beds. I pulled my carrots and we prepped it with leaves and mulching. I'm not ready for winter and all the cold and snow that it brings. I don't think I have much of a choice. Matt's been very excited about fall's arrival... I had plans to do some more apple canning including apple pie filling or even apple butter but my evenings have changed so much since this summer.
We were busy this past weekend. Starting with Friday... Eleanor spent the day with Grandma Di. We didn't have daycare that day and I had an all day board meeting so it worked out perfect that Grandma wanted to spend a bit of extra time. This was the most time she'd spent with Sassafras and they covered a lot of ground... they hung out with Great Grandma Dar and even went to the airport before going home and prepping for Matt and I's birthday celebrations.
On Saturday, we had lunch with Grandma and Grandpa Remynse who got to see how much she's grown and changed since they last saw her. After lunch, we headed over to Oliver's first birthday party.
MJR getting ready in the morning: So, what does one do at a one-year old's birthday party? I feel like I'm entering a new chapter of my life.
ALR: You are.
Allison did a beautiful job putting it all together. She had appetizers for everyone to snack on. From minicorn dogs to jalapeno popper quiches - it was all tasty! The decorations were so smart and classy... I took notes and plan to copy a bit. Allison made Oliver's smash cake - Apple Cinnamon with a Blueberry whip cream frosting. Matt was a bit jealous as he wanted to try a piece. He was every bit as enthusiastic as I expected him to be... I loved his two hand grab approach to the cake!
After presents were opened, Matt and I got ready to go. We aren't sure when we'll see the Pinkertons next and after the cutest fairwell ever, I hope it's not too long. After we put Len in her seat, Oliver came over to say goodbye in his own way! He reach down to take her hand and then even rocked her chair a bit. I won't lie - melted my heart a lot to see how gentle they were with each other.
On Sunday, Len and I headed out to Dickinson for Shantelle and Alice's baby
shower. Alice is starting to grow and has some sweet squeaks. Right now, she is all her dad in looks right now. Len enjoyed playing on the floor while I hung out with Alice and at the shower she proceeded to spit/raspberry all over while Shantelle opened gifts. For the most part she was exceptionally well behaved!
MJR lays EER down for the night.
ALR: She's not all the way down, she's moving around.
MJR: We'll see how this goes.
10 minutes later EER has rotated 180 degrees and is now laying with head down, slightly snoring.
ALR: She went down all by herself.
MJR: She's self-soothing.
ALR begins to cry.
MJR: What's wrong?
ALR: My baby is growing up... she doesn't need us.
MJR: Well, she can't get out of the crib without us, so she still needs us.
ALR sniffles: I guess you are right.

Reverberation (ri vurbuhrey shuhn)
Well, it's so obvious, especially when I compared Alice and Len this past weekend, that my baby is growing up. I see her deliberate moves, I see her eating solids, I see her rolling over, and I see her getting frustrated with things - whether it's herself getting centered on a chair or with toys and situations. She's finding her voice in this big world. I want to hold on to every moment and she seems to be changing quicker than I realize. As we took her 5 month photo shoot, I watched her rip her belly sticker from her shirt and thought, hmmm, these photo sessions aren't going to get any easier.
On the food front, she's starting to get the hang of solids... don't get me wrong, we still are struggling. She grabs the spoon, she wants to feel the food in her mouth - with her hand, she thinks we aren't feeding her fast enough sometimes, but she's tried a few things and stained a few articles of clothing. I think we are getting 90% of each meal inside of her, which is better than when we started.
On the cat front, things may be improving there too. They have never hated her, but there's been a clear avoidance. Now they'll jump on the bed to take a look or jump in the tub to see what's going on.... Len will watch them and has reached out to grab them. We are starting to work on already "petting the kitty nice."
The weekend was a busy weekend...We went back for Matt's unofficial 10 year reunion. Since Eleanor's been born he's gotten a bit sentimental and nostalgic for "the good ol'days." We contacted Pinkertons to see if they were interested in coming back and taking in some of the homecoming weekend.
There was a lot prep as traveling now has involved more lists. We pack our bags and then also pack her bag and her sleeping equipment and eating equipment and toys and extra blankets... and pretty soon I find myself using a cart just to get things into our room. By the way, she didn't really care.
The first night, we had drinks and a tour of the house. I've seen pics and video but nothing compares to actually seeing it in person. Matt had a couple different rooms and I got to see a few of them. I was surprised at how big the house was. We met some of the current members and pledges. They were supper accommodating and nice, especially to us wives! We were also very appreciative to Allison's mom, who took on babysitting both Oliver and Eleanor while we went out. I was so glad she behaved herself well!
Laying in bed on Friday night,
ALR: So, what did you think of the house seeing it now?
MJR: Oh, it looked really good!
ALR: What?!
MJR: yeah, it was in good shape and they cleaned it up nice!
ALR: Seriously?
MJR: You didn't think so?
ALR: Did they give out free tetanus shots if you lived there or did they require proof before you could move in?
MJR: Awww, come'on it wasn't that bad.
ALR: Did you ever take your shoes off?
MJR: I walked around barefoot all the time.
ALR: I just threw up a bit in my mouth.
On Saturday, we had a full day. We did not attend the parade but we did a little around the down drive before heading to Green Mill for deep dish pizza with the Pinkerton posse. It was great to watch Oliver scarf food down by the handful... made me realize that in short order my sassy redhead will be in
the same boat! From there, we headed to the game. We had necessary equipment to watch the game... the carrier (which she is awesome in), baby noise mufflers, and the smallest foam finger that you ever did see. She was awesome during the game. UND won over Southern Utah but my favorite was during the third quarter (after her second quarter nap) was when she found her cheering voice! We hear the tiniest screams and when we looked down there she was cheering/screaming away! She didn't fuss/she didn't squabble the entire game! She even drew some admiration on how cute of baby she was - I think it was the sprout pony tail!
That night we had the formal for the Beta house. We dropped Len off with a team of babysitters who were excited to see her and headed off in our best dressed. This was my first "frat party" and it was an eye opener, I won't lie...I've been out of college for 9 years and it felt suddenly like 29 years! Everyone was supper nice and they had the party right at the house. The food was good, the music was loud, the dance floor was sticky from drinks, and if you were thirsty - it was your own fault... I am trying to decide what was my favorite - spending some time talking with Allison (as her and John are at the same space in their lives) or watching our men enjoy their alumni status and relive a bit of their glory days.
ALR and Allison standing on the balcony, men are behind with college kids.
MJR: Well boys, when I was risk management officer...
ALR to Allison: Oh, great... this sounds like a party conversation starter.
More gloating and boosting overheard in background
MJR and John: Yeah! We'll go play beer pong!
ALR to Allison: I've never seen Matt play beer pong in the past 5 years.
Allison: I've seen them play beer pong. They weren't very good when they lived here.
We had to leave earlier than the boys wanted us to... they were hoping we'd leave them there. We picked up Len from Scraperville and headed back to the hotel. We ended up sitting and visiting until 2:00 that morning about anything and everything, conversations that Matt and I have been waiting to have. The next morning, Eleanor woke up at 6:00, and she really couldn't be convinced to go back to sleep. We got ready, had breakfast, said our goodbyes and headed home. We can't party like we used to because it was the longest drive ever back home! At least we had a sleepyhead in the backseat who slept all the way from GF to Steele.
We both went to bed early and slept hard!
Best meal: Red pepper tacos! mmmmm!
MJR and John talking to pledges
Pledge: So man, I just want to talk about your jobs. What do you do?
MJR gives briefish explanation
John: I'm a commercial pilot.
Pledge: That's What I Want To DO! Which one?
John: Delta
Pledge: Yeah, dude! That's awesome! I gotta know, how much do you make?
MJR, John, and multiple Betas walking down the hall
John: Yeah, that's Berg's room.
MJR: That's the one where that chick (ruined) his carpet.
Beta guy: Hey, that's my room!
MJR to Allison and ALR: Yeah so John and I are going through the guys' rooms and getting beer?
ALR: Getting beers?
MJR: yeah, we are either going in taking them out of their fridges or walking in and saying Give us a beer.
ALR: Can you do that?
John: We're alumni.
MJR: If they don't want their beer taken, they should have taken locked their door!
Sunday morning
ALR: I'm sorry you had to go home early because we had to pick up our daughter.
MJR: It's okay, the way John and I were going, we were headed down a dangerous path.

Continuity (kon tn oo i tee)
October is officially here. We are fully in Fall. In my house there is talk of hunting and jerky and deer and birds and smokers. It's been interesting have 2 men in the house who talk the same language and get excited off each other's conversation in relation to the previously mentioned items. Len and I don't really care, except when we have other things to discuss with these men or want other things done.
Eric has been helping out with Len. He fed her the other night and it was nice to be able to get some stuff done around the kitchen while she attempted to eat mush through her chin. I don't think he's independently changed a diaper yet (#1 or #2) but we are working in baby steps here.
Other big happenings include the All Breed Cattle Tour held by the ND Stockmen's Association. Mom and Dad were a stop this year and they went all out in getting ready. This is why Matt made so many trips out to help and they also mowed, cleaned up, and prepared for the 118 people in multiple cars and two buses to come to the place. Len and I went out to take it all in as I know Dad was excited to play host and show off what he's been working on for 30 years. He even did a radio spot with Red River Farm Network.
October 5th was a big day in our house... for a couple reasons! Len ate avocado - her first real solid food! Matt's been anxiously waiting for this.
At work, I did a little volunteering at my favorite Bismarck family place, the zoo! At work, they asked if we could come help out by raking leaves. It was odd to see the zoo so quiet and empty - I think the animals appreciated a little activity too. We were watched by the cats and the bears!
On the Eleanor front, she's discovered how to blow raspberry spits. The other night, she proceeded to blow and blow and blow, paying little attention to the adults in the house. When I finally went over to interact and check what all the noise was about I discovered she had created Lake Len in the tray of her exersaucer! Later that night, when we went to bed, we listened to her through the monitor razz away. That night after her 4:00am feeding, more spitting, and the next morning, that's how we knew she was awake!
We had a busy weekend! Saturday was my cousin, Twila's wedding to Nick. This was Len's second wedding. She looked pretty cute and was pretty good. She even got a nap in during the ceremony so she wasn't too loud. This was the first time she met a lot of the Moser family. It was fun to show her off. There was some definite discussion on who she looks like... we got all sorts of answers to Matt, myself, a combination, my dad, and her second cousin, Thane. She did tucker out and woke up mid dance slightly crabby, which was our cue to take her home. It was a beautiful wedding and Twila's dress reminded me of Great Gatsby. In thinking back, I'm not sure what my favorite part was... when her and Wade sat at the end of the aisle and he looked at her and I lipread "Ready" and she gave him a smile and nodded OR when they danced their father/daughter dance. Their relationship was obvious and beautiful.
The other reason October 5th was a big deal was that Alice Darlene made her way into the world. I joke that Alice is going to be Len's best friend but I am excited to watch these two grow up together. Shantelle and Rick have been such good friends and a big part of our life. We continue to experience life together at the same pace and I'm excited to watch them grow into their parenting. I have a feeling that this is the first of many pics of these two.
Best meal: After we saw Alice, Matt suggested we go to El Sombrero, like the old days. I enjoyed Chicken chimichanga - no pico and a boat of white sauce with chips and salsa!
ALR: okay, I want to put her down and we'll get a picture of them together.
ALR sets Alice on blanket with EER.
ALR: I think we'll have to hold Sassafrass's arms down, she's a bit wild today!
EER: AHHHH!

Autumn (aw tuhm)
My birthday was celebrated a bit differently than in the past. It was pretty low key! Len enjoyed oatmeal mush while I enjoyed smoked salmon. The nice surprise was that my mom showed up with flowers and a cake and enjoyed with us! It was a pleasant day and I was glad to spend it with faces I love.
We also prepared for the weekend, it was a big weekend for Matt as he got a pronghorn tag this year. He's been waiting a long time to get it and this would be the year that he finally was able to go. He prepared by perusing the camo and also by testing out his stocking - as antelope you creep up on versus deer that you walk and kick out. I was happy to see him so excited to go. I was a little apprehensive of a weekend by myself - I've come to rely on our tagteaming efforts!

I prepped for all this weekend. I had been given gords and pumpkins from Vern and Sue, next door and I made good use of them on our front steps. This is one holiday that I do do a bit more on our path.
One thing I did want to do for my birthday was go to the food truck festival. With Matt out of town, Eric was stuck! We shared quite a few things including maple bacon donuts, mustard dipped walleye wrap, award winning bacon trainwreck sandwich, and both enjoyed ice cream cookie sundaes. I think my favorite was the walleye wrap! So tasty! Eleanor napped a bit while we took it all in.

Matt came home Saturday night. He got his pronghorn. He commented on how crazy the hunt was with 400 tags given in his area but he got his goat just 3 miles north of the SD border. He also managed to get cactus in his knee, who knows how long that will take to get out!
I was very glad Eric was there as the two of them hung and dressed out the animal and then on Sunday proceeded to process it all.
Best meal: Birthday supper of salmon followed by salmon and crackers later that week!
MJR: I love fall.
ALR: I know you do, honey.
MJR: Ahh, the crisp in the air. The change in the season. It always makes me nostalgic for college days.
ALR: Serious?
MJR: Yeah. By the way, I talked to Tim a couple weeks ago and told him we'd love to come apple picking.
ALR: Apple picking?
MJR: It's a wonderful fall activity!
ALR stares.
MJR: What do you think this season's fall color is going to be?
ALR stares.
ALR: Like fashion or the leaves?
MJR: Fashion... maybe maroon or orange or brown?
ALR: Who are you?
